I'm looking to get IAAP certified this year. I tend to see more people on
LinkedIn with the CPACC (Certified Professional in Accessibility Core
Competencies) certification than the WAS (Web Accessibility Specialist)
certification. Is the CPACC more generally recognized and, therefore,
preferred? We have many large universities as partners and having a
certification to attest that skill set would be good when talking to
prospective partners.

Thanks,
Mike

Part of the reason you do not see as many WAS certifications is because you need to meet a group of requirements before you can take WAS. For example, one of the potential requirements involves having at least 3 years working on accessibility.

There are other requirements as well and you may want to look at the information about WAS certification to see if you meet some of those requirements. I think they want you to meet at least 7 of the 10 requirements before taking WAS.

Thanks,
Tim

No, the CPACC is easier than the others, and more general.

Thanks for the replies. I have the knowledge and experience for the WAS,
and was wondering which is more widely recognized before I pony up the
money for the certification exam.

Mike,

In case you haven't received an answer to your question. Both IAAP certifications are equally recognized. The difference between the certifications is the breadth and depth of knowledge it takes to get the certification.

CPACC covers accessibility more generally. It doesn't just cover web accessibility. It covers things like disability, web accessibility, universal design, laws, and a number of other topics. It doesn't go deep into any specific aspect of accessibility but tries to give the student a good broad understanding of accessibility.

WAS is very much focused on web accessibility. So it goes very deep into that topic. It is definitely considered the more difficult certification.

The general recommendation for IAAP certifications is to take the CPACC first to get a general grounding in accessibility. Then take one of the other certifications that focus on a specific aspect of accessibility like WAS.

Because of this general recommendation, you will find a lot more people with CPACC's than WAS certifcations. Because CPACC is more general, it tends to appear on more job descriptions than WAS which would really only apply to certain types of web development work.

I hope that helps!

Thanks!
Tim

I generally recommend CPACC is for accessibility practitioners, policy
makers or someone who manages accessibility program. For developers, I do
recommend WAS.
