Reposting this from mastodon ... seems I'm not the only one who'd
welcome this. An idea perhaps for the next SR survey?

one thing that i'd love the WebAim screen reader survey to differentiate
better is how results break down by OS (mainly to be able to have more
segmented "on Mac, VoiceOver is effectively the only screen reader used"
or similar). it might then also reframe some of the other
statements/results, e.g. "71.6% of respondents use more than one
desktop/laptop screen reader" ... I suspect those 71.6% are effectively
Windows users?

...

i'd imagine a nice interface where you can switch between "global"
results, and then to specific OSs and have the relevant subsections just
filtered for a particular OS.

Well, as far as I know there is only one screen reader on OSX and on
Linux, so any reference to multiple screen readers has to be Windows.
Also, last time I tested, Safari on Windows was entirely unusable with
a screen reader, so I assume Safari use must refer to OSX only.
The Safari and Voiceover use are very similar.
That being said, sure, being able to break the data down by OS is not
a bad idea.

Well yes, thank you, I know all of that. But that's my point: having it
all mashed up together is slightly confusing/misleading for those not in
the know.

p.s.: Safari for Windows hasn't existed for aeons. And it's macOS, not OSX

Yes, I agree that it would be useful to see a breakdown of Windows screen readers independent of the general section on desktop screen reader usage. I'd like to see a seprate section on Windows SR as well as the disclaimer about the Mac's choice of one.

Hi
Technically there are efforts to make a third party screen reader for MacOS, though it's way too early to be included in the survey I think. Info here:

Here’s some additional data that informs this wonderful question…

Primary screen reader reported by respondents that indicate Mac as their primary OS when using their primary screen reader:

* VoiceOver – 91%
* Other – 3.5%
* SuperNova – 2.8%
* ChromeVox – 2.1%
* JAWS - .7%

Primary screen reader reported by respondents that indicate Windows as their primary OS when using their primary screen reader:

* JAWS – 47.0%
* NVDA – 43.4%
* SuperNova – 3.8%
* ZoomText – 3.1%
* Narrator - .8%
* VoiceOver - .3%
* Others – 1.7%

For Mac, the responses other than the 93.8% that reported using VoiceOver or ChromeVox (the only 2 viable options on macOS) could perhaps be explained by user error/misunderstanding of the questions, such as someone using macOS as their primary OS, but using Windows for screen reader usage. Or maybe them using Parallels, Bootcamp, or similar to use a Windows screen reader within macOS or on Apple hardware.

The lower percentages represent few respondents. These anomalies are within a reasonable margin of error.

Thanks,

Jared
