Hello everyone,

We've been using PAC 3 for a while but not too frequently (basically on
client request) and recently I looked at two PDFs that are clearly tagged
but when I run them in PAC 3, they come up as zero for many of the
checkpoint categories, and one PDF in particular it first came up normal
with a bunch of Fail items to fix and when we fixed them, then suddenly
those categories came up as zero instead of the previous number of scanned
items the file had. Not useful since it's showing the PDF as passing but
that's because it thinks it has zero items to pass or fail ha ha!

Is there something that causes this to happen, like an export error or
using a certain setting in Indesign or using a fix in Acrobat's Preflight
tools? Is there a fix for this so that the tags and other items are scanned
like they should be?

I know there's a newer version of PAC (PAC 2024) but some of our clients
have explicitly listed PAC 3 passing so that's what I'm aiming for, at
least for the moment.

Thanks!

Hi Christine,

I recently heard about Pac. While I do not have an answer for your question, I would like to take the opportunity to ask you a question. Is Pac an open source application? Based on the research I did it sounded that it is an open source program.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe PAC is "free as in beer" rather than open source

That was my confusion. Thank you for clarifying that point. Greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone,

As a follow-up to my question, I thought I would post an update on what
I've figured out, for future reference in the mailing list archives. We had
this problem pop up again and I believe I stumbled upon the answer by pure
luck.

It seems that if PAC 3 returns zero results in some Checkpoint categories,
the problem may be that the software used to create the PDF is too new for
PAC 3. We were using Indesign and when we tried saving the design file as
an IDML file and then opening it in an older version of Indesign (the
closest we could get to 2017/2018 when PAC 3 was released) and exported the
PDF, PAC 3 was able to scan the PDF properly. So in newer Indesign,
something in the way it exports the accessible tagged PDFs is not
compatible with PAC 3.

I emailed Axes4 to confirm if my theory was true (that PAC 3 is too old for
current version of Indesign) and a very kind developer answered my email
and said that was very likely to be the issue and that PAC 3 is no longer
supported, that they recommend using PAC 2024 instead. This makes sense
since PAC 3 is already 6 years old and has been updated twice already since
then.
